A screaming baby due to gas makes everyone in the house upset. The baby can't communicate what is wrong and what is working, so it's up to the parents to start some trial-and-error through various methods to see what brings relief.
Not every baby is the same, so what worked for one of your children won't necessarily be the magical solution for the others. Here are 6+ ways you can help your baby pass the gas and be more pleasant.
1. Position. Since gas is generally formed by the baby taking in too much air while eating, WebMD reminds parents to position their baby with the head slightly higher than the stomach.
2. Massage. If you suspect gas is the source of your baby's discomfort, gently tap on the belly. If it sounds hollow, chances are you're probably right. Parents recommends trying a tummy massage to help relieve the gas. Stroke from the ribs to the top of the hip bone on the left-hand side. You can also go across the top of the stomach and down the left-hand side.
3. Simethicone. Simethicone drops are considered safe, and when nothing else is working, New Kids-center says to feel free to try the drops. It's the baby equivalent of taking Gas-X.
4. Burp. Since trapped air is usually the source of baby gas, WebMD reminds parents to burp your baby often during feeding and right afterwards.
5. Tummy time. Parents recommends giving your baby "tummy time" every day. The time spent on the stomach helps move the gas through the intestines along with helping to strengthen head and neck muscles.
6. Gripe. Healthline shares that gripe water may be an option if you don't care for the idea of simethicone drops. Be sure to read the packaging carefully so as not to give your baby one that has been sweetened with sugar. Gripe is not recommended for infants under one month in age.
7. Bottles. Sometimes the issue with babies is how the baby is eating. New Kids-center states that if you aren't nursing, trying different bottles may be all that's needed.
If your baby is suffering from gas, don't despair. See if these remedies soothe your baby and give you the respite you need.
