No matter where a person lives, spiders are prevalent. These little guys make themselves at home in your home, along with using the outdoors for homes. Because there is no sure-fire way to get rid of spiders, chances are you'll eventually get bit.
For the most part, spider bites don't create issues for people. Some people are allergic to spider bites, though, so the itching or other side effects of the bite need to be treated. Here are 7+ ways to treat the itch from a spider bite.
1. Wash. One of the first things that needs to be done to a spider bite, according to the Mayo Clinic, is to wash the bite and surrounding area with a mild soap. This just helps ensure that an infection doesn't set in.
2. Elevate. If the bite is on a leg or arm, Healthline says to elevate the area.
3. Activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is used to draw stuff out of the skin, so Dr. Axe recommends making an activated charcoal paste to put on the bite.
4. Ice. Applying ice to the bite will help with swelling and itching. Healthline says to apply ice to the bite for 10 minutes at a time, giving the skin a rest in between.
5. Potato poultice. No research that this works is available, but no harm should come from trying it. Dr. Axe uses a potato poultice on spider and insect bites. Grate a potato and place the shreds in a thin cloth like muslin or cheese cloth. Put the cloth on the bite until the potato dries out.
6. Baking soda. Baking soda helps draw infections to the surface and also calms skin irritation. WebMD says to make a baking soda paste and apply that to the bite.
7. Calamine lotion. If controlling the itch is all you need, WebMD recommends applying calamine lotion, which can be bought over-the-counter.
8. Witch hazel. Witch hazel is an astringent and has been used by many to treat bug bites. No research is available to say if it will work, but it won't hurt to try it. Dr. Axe applies the witch hazel straight on the bite. Use a cotton swab for application.
9. Aloe vera. Aloe vera is great for skin problems, and may possibly help with a spider bite. Dr. Axe applies the aloe vera gel right from a leaf of the plant to the bite. If you don't have an aloe plant, look for aloe vera gel at the store.
